Welcome to my review of the week.
1. MOST INTERESTING NEWS STORY
Very personal, this one. Some of you may have seen analysis of Drunk Britain recently. An example of this was demonstrated first hand whilst watching TV at 11pm on Tuesday night, when we heard a loud thump outside and what sounded like someone throwing three buckets of water at our front door. They were, of course, being sick all over all over it. I opened the door to ask what the @*%!? they were doing. The offending woman was long gone down the street, but her female mate told me not to be so aggressive. “She’s very ill you know,” she protested. I suggested the gutter might have been a better place – for both of them.

2. BEST BUSINESS MOMENT
The Top Ten Most Endangered office products of next year is great fun. This features the demise of desk phones – to be replaced by smartphones; USB sticks – to be replaced by cloud networking; and calculators – use your smartphone instead.

3. BEST TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT
My favourite this week is the smart textiles with phone antenna built into your clothing. No more need to hold a phone to your ear…

4. BEST BUSINESS BOOK OR IDEA
I am currently reading Daniel Kahneman’s Thinking, fast and slow. At 400 pages plus, it’s a monster. It covers much of what Dan Ariely looks at in The Upside of Irrationality and Thaler and Sunstein’s Nudge
I’ll post a full report when I have finished….

5. BEST MUSIC MOMENT
Ocean Colour Scene at Brixton Academy. A well-intentioned run through of their classic Moseley Shoals album was marred by poor sound. Everyone was slaughtered and my mate Dave found the guy behind him in the queue for the gents relieving himself into a cup.

6. BEST OVERSEAS TRAVEL IDEA OR WORLD ISSUE
Vienna is great at this time of year and very romantic. Highly recommended for a quick winter break.

7. BEST BIT OF BULLSHIT
If I mention what I have heard this week then I’ll probably lose my clients. But I was reminded of a classic:
“We have to squeeze the lemon in both directions and drive the swine to market.”
This is a beautiful collision of two completely unrelated ideas. This person has apparently got a lemon, and he’s not content with squeezing it at one end – he’s intent on doing both. Meanwhile he has one or more pigs that he is driving to market. But the relationship between the citrus fruit and the livestock is not at all clear. Do pigs yearn for lemon juice? Or are they running away from it? And is the market impressed with either? What we can say for certain is that these culinary and bestial analogies have just collided horribly.

Stimulating, amusing and intriguing stuff as always when I find my way to your site . Thank you. But just to alert you that a typo has crept into your link to endangered tools at item 2. You have a full stop at the end of the link which leads to an error message.
Thanks for pointing out. I have rectified it. Glad you are enjoying the blog. Apologies for slow reply – I have been in Prague for a week – which I will write up in the next round-up.
