7. BEST BIT OF BULLSHIT
“Let’s push the envelope and see what levers we can pull”.
Business people love pushing and pulling things, talking about energy, and generally getting involved in a range of hydraulic metaphors. It’s all gone off in this one. First of all we have pushing the envelope, which on first hearing doesn’t sound very hard – we can all do that. In fact, it turns out that the envelope in question comes from the pressure tolerance that fighter pilots can stand at enormous speeds, so that’s why macho managers like the phrase so much – not that they know where it comes from. Not content with breaking an airspeed record, this person wants to pull some levers as well. So there you have it. If you push some envelopes around a desk and pull a couple of levers, you’ll really be playing with the big boys.
